Artist/Clinician Bios for the 2013 Day of Percussion

Dr. Ming-Hui Kuo is Adjunct Professor of Percussion at Morehead State University in Morehead, KY. She was an intern performing member of Ju Percussion Group from 1993 to 2002. During her time with JPG, she performed in over 500 concerts and 100 music related activities including the Annual seasonal concerts at Taiwan National Concert Hall, Taipei International Percussion Convention in 2002 and 2005. Her international performance with JPG includes China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong-Kong, Macao, Spain, Hungary, Australia, Canada and the United States. Dr. Kuo has been a featured soloist with MSU Percussion Ensemble at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention 2003. In 2011 Dr. Kuo co-foundered the XPlorium Chamber Ensemble with Dr. Nathan Nabb. XPlorium Ensemble has been invited for performances at the 2011 WASBE Conference & 20th Chiayi City International Band Festival. Dr. Kuo received a Doctor of Musical Arts in Percussion Performance at the University of Kentucky in December 2012.

Chris Munson

Surrounded by music at an early age, Chris Munson grew up listening to, learning from, and performing with some of South Florida’s most notable musicians.  He began performing with regional jazz artists at the age of 14 and working in the studio scene before graduating from high school.  His musical development continued when he decided to move to Nashville in 1994.

Over the next six years he worked steadily in the Nashville studio and live scene.  During that time he appeared on over 1,000 recordings, numerous award winning albums (including two Grammy Nominations), toured nationally with a variety of artists, was heard on over 500 radio stations nationwide, and appeared on nationally broadcast television shows and internationally broadcast radio shows.  Additionally, he held positions as a studio manager, record label manager, and booking agent.  He recorded or performed with several notable artists including David Amram, Gail Bliss, Fred Bogert, David Carradine, Bobby Carradine, Vassar Clements, Jeff Coffin, Doug Dillard, Jerry Douglas, Michael Falzarano, Rick Gordon, Wycliffe Gordon, Tom Harrell, Jorma Kaukonen, Lee Konitz, Ronnie McDowell, John McEuen, Leon Medica, Tim O’Brien, Anders Osborne, Greg Osby, Mickey Rafael, LeAnn Rimes, Merl Saunders, Chester Thompson, Trout Fishing in America, and Snooky Young. 

The experiences and connections earned during that time secured Chris a position as the Music Technology Coordinator at Lane Community College in 2000.  The main focus of this position was the development of a new 1.5 million dollar electronic music lab, recording studio, and music resource center.  Soon the faculty recognized his love and talent for teaching and encouraged him to both develop and teach a three-sequence course of study in Audio Engineering. 

In 2004, he decided to return to school to pursue a full-time career in music education at the collegiate level.  He graduated with honors from Eastern Kentucky University in 2006 with a B.M. in Performance and was recognized as the Outstanding Senior Instrumentalist during his final semester.  In 2008, he graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a M.A. in Jazz Studies with concentrations in both performance and composition / arranging.  

Chris is currently the Director of Recording Arts at EKU where he teaches courses in audio production, music technology, and applied drum set lessons.  He is an active composer / arranger in a multitude of genres.  His compositions and arrangements have been performed by student and faculty ensembles at various universities, including a piece for Lee Kontiz and the MTSU faculty jazz nonet.  His original works are published by Drop 6 Media and Simmons Jazz and scholarly articles / texts are published by Alfred and Mel Bay.

Colin Hill is an active performer and educator of classical percussion, jazz drumset, and world music. He is currently serving as a sabbatical replacement at the University of Kentucky, as Visiting Percussion Instructor at Centre College, and as the Director of Percussion for the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras.

As a performing artist, Colin has been invited to perform at the Taiwanese International Band Festival, the Paris Conservatory’s PerKumania Percussion Festival, Percussive Arts Society’s International Convention, and the Jazz Educator Network’s Annual Conference.  He also performs regularly with the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, XPlorium Chamber Ensemble, and BluHill Percussion Duo.

Colin has appeared as a guest artist and clinician at numerous high schools and universities throughout the midwest as well as Percussive Arts Society Days of Percussion in Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee.  He holds degrees from the University of North Texas, Indiana University, and is currently pursuing a D.M.A at the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Brian S. Mason, Associate Professor of Percussion at Morehead State University, is a highly respected innovator of the contemporary marching percussion ensemble. His career in the DCI activity spanned more than two decades, claiming numerous awards and honors with the Cavaliers, Phantom Regiment, and the Santa Clara Vanguard. In high demand as a clinician, performer, and adjudicator, he has appeared throughout the United States, Asia, Europe, Canada, and Mexico, and his compositions have been performed around the world.

Currently, Brian coordinates the percussion area at Morehead State University in Morehead, KY and also directs the award-winning Marching Percussion Ensemble, featured on VicFirth.com in a web-based instructional video series, Marching Percussion 101. At MSU, he performs with the Faculty Jazz Ensemble, the Faculty Chamber Ensemble, and the Faculty Brass Quintet. Off-campus, he is a contract section player with the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, and appears as a guest artist with high school and university percussion ensembles across the US.

Brian received his D.M.A. and B.M. as a student of James B. Campbell at the University of Kentucky, and his M.M. at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas as a student of Dr. Dean Gronemeier. He is a member of the Percussive Arts Society Board of Directors, Vic Firth Education Committee, the P.A.S. Health and Wellness Committee, and the P.A.S. Marching Percussion Committee. Brian has published articles in Percussive Notes, has been interviewed in Modern Drummer and Band and Orchestra Magazine, and co-authored the 2000 Modern Drummer Readers Poll's "No. 1 Drum Set Method Book," The Commandments of R&B Drumming (Warner Brothers). Brian is a performing artist for Mapex Drums, and Majestic Percussion, Vic Firth sticks and mallets, Zildjian cymbals, Evans drumheads, and Grover Pro Percussion, and his original works are published through Row-Loff Productions, Bachovich Music Publications, and Tap Space Publications.

Dr. Mark Berry is Principal Timpanist with Orchestra Kentucky, a position he has held since 2002. He has performed with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Cleveland Baroque Ensemble, the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, the Owensboro Symphony, and the Jackson Symphony. 

Dr. Berry’s solo percussion CD entitled, “DIMENSION” was recently released on the Equilibrium label. His research has been published in Percussive Notes in an article entitled, “Thirteen Drums, Op. 66: Interpreting in Concurrence with Maki Ishii’s “Space-Time” Concept.”  His percussion compositions are published by C-Alan Publications, HoneyRock Publishing, and Tapspace Publications. 

He is a founding member of the cello / percussion duo, Col Legno. The duo recently premiered Berry’s composition, “Heliospheric II” at the Hawaii International Conference on the Arts.  Dr. Berry is Associate Professor of Percussion at Western Kentucky University where he founded the WKU Steelband in 2004 as a grant award recipient. In 2008, he was recognized as the TDKMEA “College/University Teacher of Year.” Dr. Berry has earned degrees from the University of Michigan (DMA Performance, MM Performance) and The Ohio State University (BMusEd). His principal teachers include Michael Udow and Salvatore Rabbio with additional studies with Julie Spencer, Ted Piltzecker, Fernando Meza, and James L. Moore.

Dr. Brad Meyer (www.Brad-Meyer.com) is a percussion artist and composer with an extensive and diverse teaching background. Currently, Brad is the Director of Percussion Studies at Stephen F. Austin State University (Nacogdoches, TX) where he directs the percussion ensemble and steel band (“Jacks of Steel”). He also teaches the private percussion lessons and percussion methods course at SFA. Dr. Meyer was recently the Visiting Instructor of Music in Percussion/Percussion Ensemble Director at Centre College (Danville, KY) and the Adjunct Professor of Percussion at Tennessee Technological University (Cookeville, TN) during the fall of 2011. Brad is the Vice President of the Kentucky Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society as well as a member of the PAS’s Technology Committee. Dr. Meyer completed his Doctorate of Music in Percussion Performance under James Campbell at the University of Kentucky.

James Campbell has received worldwide recognition as a performer, pedagogue and author, and is a respected figure in the development of the contemporary percussion ensemble. He has toured extensively throughout The Americas, Europe, and Asia. Currently Provost’s Distinguished Service Professor of Music and Director of Percussion Studies at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, he also holds the positions of Principal Percussionist with the Lexington Philharmonic, drummer with the Kentucky Jazz Repertory Orchestra, and Past-President of the Percussive Arts Society.

 Well known for his long past association with the internationally renowned Rosemont Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, Jim has served as their principal instructor, arranger, and Program Coordinator and was inducted into the Drum Corps International Hall of Fame. He served as Percussion Director for the McDonald’s All-American High School Band and has performed at the International Society of Music Education World Conference, International Patagonia Percussion Festival, Journèes de la Percussion, PercuSonidos Percussion Festival, Australian Percussion Eisteddfod, MENC National In-Service Conference, Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic, MusicFest Canada, All-Japan Band Clinic, Music for All World Percussion Symposium, state MEA conventions across the country, and frequently appears as an artist at the Percussive Arts Society International Conventions (PASIC).  

Among his award-winning works for percussion, Jim has published with Meredith Music, C.L. Barnhouse Co., C. Alan Publications, Innovative Percussion, Row-Loff Productions, Bachovich Music Publications, and Alfred Publications with whom he served as the Percussion Team Author for the Expressions Music Curriculum. Jim is an artist and endorsee for Innovative Percussion, Evans Drumheads, Grover Pro Percussion, and is a member of the Latin Percussion Educational Advisory Board. He is an Artist and Educator for the Avedis Zildjian Cymbal Company and a Performing Artist for Yamaha Corporation of America, Band & Orchestra Division.
